A tiring day from work, a road trip, a train journey; men always have the easy way out when it comes to using public toilets. Let’s face it; a woman would always try and avoid a public toilet because it’s not well maintained or sanitized and is immersed in dirt and filth. Are men actually aware of the kind of problems that women face in public toilets? Let’s have a reality check.
1. Women’s best friend: Never found!
Women love to look at themselves in a mirror even if it’s to crib about how their hair didn’t look good the entire day or a surprised version of how they turned so ugly all of a sudden! Irrespective of the reason, do you really find a mirror in a public toilet?
2. A stinky shoe? Maybe it’s a public toilet you’re stepping into!
A good fragrance can change the aura around and highlight one’s mood immediately. But never has a woman been able to take a trip to public toilets without having to cover her face with her dupatta or scarf. Some think of major skills in controlling themselves or think of previous situations where they successfully did. But here, such unhealthy skills lead you to an unhealthy lifestyle and takes a toll on a woman’s health.
3. Dreadful Décor
A nightmare in progress! When you enter a public toilet, you find the worst preview of a filthy world of unclean floors, yellow walls, imaginary germs, and dirty toilet seats. Poor lighting, bad cubicle designs, broken latches and doors with holes; where is the so-called safety then?
4. Stone-age caves-more artistic than toilet cubicles!
Ever looked around in a public toilet? If you’re really lucky you’ll find a broken mug, used tissue roll and a tap and sometimes a bucket to make it a little colorful! Want to have a look inside it? Don’t even think about it! Besides these, non-working flushes, no hygiene plan, no care taker, lack of dustbins and no proper sanitary disposal bins can cause immense discomfort to a woman.
5. Flush. Wash. Repeat. But, with what?
Probably one of the biggest enemies of a public toilet! As if a dirty, filthy atmosphere wasn’t enough already that women have to bear with either limited or no use of water at all! Lack of a jet spray has now become an accepted reality. But even the taps in the cubicles look like paintings in a museum, with dust all over them amidst faded, dirty, yellow walls, left untouched and don’t really fulfill the only purpose they have.
6. Skin problems? Blame them dirty hands!
A public toilet always has a soap dispenser but no soap in it. There is definitely nothing to compensate for the horror of visiting a public toilet! The state of the sink and “working” taps accounts for unnecessary germs and bacteria that increase the risk of infections and skin diseases. Not only do you roam with germs all over your hands, you touch your face with it which makes it a storehouse of germs too that might affect your skin and cause unnecessary rash on it.
7. First generation, yet last in line!
As youngsters, we face a journey of near death inside a public toilet but what about the older generation and their needs? They go through a series of problems ranging from physical infrastructure to no special facilities at all. What about those with disabilities? Disabled users might need permission or a key access to use the specialized toilets which may waste so much time!
Only building more toilets for women isn’t really a sign of sanitization, cleanliness or progression in the country. Striving to keep it clean, good maintenance is something that makes for a germ-free environment and a well-developed nation. Only this would help to reduce the risk of diseases, infections and the risk of it spreading as well!
An unhealthy lifestyle leads to an unhealthy mind. It’s not about what you achieve at the end, it’s always about how you nurture and maintain it along the way! Hats off to the Indian woman who faces this on a daily basis! All the Men out there, please take notice of this.
